Case Study: Wastewater Treatment in the Confectionery Industry

With a long history and global influence, Perfetti Van Melle Group has become one of the world’s largest producers of confectionery and chewing gum, owning renowned brands such as Alpenliebe and Mentos.

During candy and gum manufacturing, the main wastewater pollutants include starch, sugars, dairy fats, and other organic matter. This results in high COD and BOD concentrations, significant viscosity, and equipment scaling issues. The wastewater often contains large amounts of vegetable oils, which are prone to rancidity and acidification, making organic pollutants more difficult to treat effectively.

To address these challenges, our company provided an integrated wastewater treatment solution using a Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) system. The DAF unit combines fine microbubble flotation with chemical coagulation–flocculation processes, efficiently separating suspended solids, fats, and oils from the water. By injecting pressurized air to form microbubbles, the contaminants attach to bubbles, float to the surface, and are removed as sludge, leaving clarified water below.

This compact solution greatly reduces the footprint of treatment facilities, improves efficiency in handling oily wastewater, and ensures stable and reliable treatment results. For the confectionery industry, it offers a more concentrated and streamlined wastewater management approach, delivering both cost savings and compliance with discharge standards.
